What are the 7 Leave No Trace Principles?
Leave No Trace is more than a set of rules — it's a decision-making framework for responsible outdoor recreation. Whether you are catching a local regional train to the hills or taking an overnight sleeper train to a national park, these seven principles guide us to minimize our environmental footprint.
Plan Ahead and Prepare
Know the specific regulations of the area you're visiting, prepare for extreme weather, and pack the right gear. Pro-tip: When possible, schedule your trips mid-week to spread out foot traffic and reduce overcrowding on fragile trails.
Travel and Camp on Durable Surfaces
Stick to designated trails and durable surfaces like rock, gravel, or dry grass. Straying from the path causes trail erosion and destroys delicate native vegetation that can take years to recover.
Dispose of Waste Properly
Pack it in, pack it out. This means everything from plastic wrappers to biodegradable waste like apple cores and banana peels. Leftover food waste is not "natural" to these ecosystems; it alters wildlife behavior and takes months — sometimes years — to decompose.
Leave What You Find
Preserve the past and the present. Leave rocks, plants, feathers, and archaeological artifacts exactly as you found them so others can experience the joy of discovery.
Minimize Campfire Impacts
Whenever possible, use a lightweight camp stove instead of a campfire to reduce wildfire risks. If fires are permitted, use established fire rings, keep them small, and ensure the ashes are completely cold before you leave.
Respect Wildlife
